Silver Mikiver caught up with Helsinki-based stylist Nikke Hellström at the VAIN store to talk creativity, fashion, and the art of good vibes – camera in hand, naturally. Expect heavy style, silver chains, and serious energy.
Did you grow up in a creative household? Was creativity celebrated in your family?
Yes, I can gladly say so. My family has a strong theatrical background, so a creative atmosphere was always present. I’m grateful for that – and for the wonderful support I received growing up and being able to express myself freely.
Your motto is “Positivity is Pop.” Care to elaborate?
It’s a mindset, you know. Of course, you can look at it from different perspectives, and it has its limits, but for me it’s all about atmosphere. Spreading good vibes is the main thing.
What has been your biggest breakthrough so far – and how did it happen?
Starting my styling career by working with the incredibly talented Paula Vesala was a big moment for me. I really appreciate the trust she gave me then – and still does. I still remember the moment I got her message. It was crazy!I also want to thank Pike for giving me the chance to design custom stage looks – the hullutyyli era was truly a moment.
What would you say is the most beneficial skill for a stylist?
Build a strong foundation so you can trust your intuition and vision – then develop the skills that will take you further. It’s important to understand the concept behind what you’re doing and see the bigger picture.Equally important is knowing the backgrounds of different aesthetics and histories.Self-confidence and trustworthiness are vital in our field, especially when you have to make quick decisions or juggle multiple projects. If you behave well, pay attention, and treat others kindly, good things will come back to you. I just try to listen, learn, and trust the process. It’s not a sprint – it’s a marathon. A smart and healthy attitude is the way forward.
When and how did you start painting, by the way?
As a child, I told my mom that when I grew up, I’d become a kokopäivämaalari – a full-time painter, or something like that, haha. I’m grateful that I’ve already made that dream come true. Someday, I’ll make a big comeback to one of my biggest passions: painting.
How could the styling field improve, in your opinion?
By giving more space, voice, and opportunities to different styles and creatives. By supporting great work and talented people. By being more transparent, kind, and chill. In general, we can always improve by making better decisions regarding ethics, inclusivity, and the environment.
What aspects of styling do you enjoy most – and why?
The best thing about styling is that I can play around and have fun with beautiful garments and pieces. Making someone smile and feel confident means a lot. I’m honored to work on beautiful projects with lovely colleagues and amazing new people. It’s a privilege to do a job you love.
How would you describe Helsinki’s creative scene?
Helsinki has a strong community of talented, hard-working people with amazing potential – lots of unique styles, genuine passion, and skill. Year by year, we’re taking bigger steps toward global visibility.
What inspires you at the moment?
I’m a fan of dragons and skulls, haha – so mythical dark creatures and illustrations are my thing right now.
If you would do a new merch with a new slogan, what would it be?
Just swag it.
